Top five songs named after athletes
2 posts 1 day. Hopefully, this is something you’re into.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Band of Horses lately (and also LCD Soundsytem, but that’s irrelevant to this post). They have a song called “Detlef Schrempf” on their latest album, and it’s incredibly badass. As I reflected upon this the other day, I came to the realization that almost all songs named after athletes are truly top-notch.
I can’t explain this phenomenon. But I can’t debunk it either. Just check out the greatness of my fave five.
5. “Magic Johnson” - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Wait, his name is a double entendre!?! Awesome.
If you’re waiting for an AIDS joke, surely you’ve underestimated me. And I’m not just sure of this … I’m HIV Positive.
4. “Detlef Schrempf” - Band of Horses
I tell you what - this song perfectly captures the sense of melancholy that I felt when Detlef Schrempf was traded from the Pacers to the Supersonics in exchange for Derrick McKey.
I’m not kidding.
3. “Ty Cobb” - Soundgarden
God, this song makes me want to slide spikes up into a second baseman. Preferably, Jeff Kent for bogging down my fantasy baseball team.
2. “Tiger Woods” - Dan Bern
The lyrics to this number are not only hilarious, but also inspirational.
I wanted to make this No. 1, but Dan Bern looks pretty douchey in this video, so I docked him accordingly.
1. “Piazza, New York Catcher” - Belle and Sebastian
I liked this song before Juno came out, so don’t make any accusations.
Hey Mike Piazza, you know how I know you’re gay - because the fairly effeminate lead singer of Belle and Sebastian thinks you’re a switch hitter.
Is it just me, or are the boy and girl in this fan-made music video floating away on giant spermies?

Great list, although I think you missed a HUGE opportunity in picking #1 (and I love B&S): Duk Koo Kim by Sun Kil Moon.

I’ve been meaning to get into Sun Kil Moon for a while. I’ll have to amend this list if it lives up to your recommendation.
